1- "A" and "an"

are indefinite articles.They are used in front of singular countable nouns (unit nouns).

تسمى an, a ادوات نكرة.

توضع a قبل الاسم المفرد الذي يُعــد والمبدوء بحرف صحيــح..

مثل :

a pen, a man, a bus, akey...

توضع an قبل الاسم المفرد الذي يُعــد والمبدوء بحرف علة (وحروف العلة هي a, e, i, o, u).

مثل :

an ant, an egg, an insect, an orange, an umbrella..

تنبيــــه :

اذا كان حرف العلة يلفظ كما تلفظ you (يو) نستعمل a بدلا من an.

مثل :

a useful animal, a European, a university, a uniform...

اذا كان حرف العلة يلفظ كحرف صحيح، نستعمل a.

مثل :

a one legged beggar شحات ذو رجل واحدة

في بعض الكلمات لا يلفظ الحرف h، فنستعمل an.

مثل :

an hour, an honourable leader قائد محترم , an honest merchant تاجر أمين.

2- "A" or "an" is not used in front of uncountable nouns (mass nouns) الأسماء الكمية التي لا تعد.

لا نستعمل a أو an قبل الاسم الذي لا يُعــد (اسم الكمية).

مثل :

tea, water, milk, wood خشب, ink حبر, butter زبدة, cheese جبن , bread, sugar, meat, cotton قطن, money...

3- "A" or "an" is not used in front of a noun in the plural.

لا تستعمل a أو an قبل الاسم الجمع.

مثل :

Horses are animals. الخيول حيوانات

Flies are insects. الذباب حشرات

4- "The" is a definite article. It is used in front of countable and uncountable nouns.

تسمى the أداة معرفة.

وتستعمل قبل الاسم الذي يُعد والذي لا يُعــد (المفــرد والجمـــع).

مثل :

The sun, the girls, the boys, the Nile النيل...

تنبيـــه :

اذا جاءت كلمة the قبل كلمة تبدأ بحرف صحيح فتلفظ (ذا) مثل :

the door, the car, the road, the woman, the film...

اذا جاأت كلمة the قبل كلمة تبدأ بصوت علة فتلفظ (ذِي) مثل :

the ant, the east, the ink-pencil, the orange, the other one...

اما اذا كان حرف العلة يلفظ كما تلفظ كلمة you فإن كلمة the تلفظ ذَا مثل :

the university, the unity, the uniform, the usage, the universe الكون...

تستعمل the قبل اسماء المعرفة وقبل اسماء البحار والمحيطات والدول والأسماء الشهيرة وتستعمل في النصوص للأسماء التي قد تم تعريفها بجُمل سابقة..
